This seminar discusses ways to more effectively manage a difficult interaction whether at your workplace or at home. We’ll discuss: How perception influences our behavior, options for handling a difficult encounter, skill-building techniques and role plays.
Emotional Intelligence (EAP) - May 16th 2023
When we understand our own emotions and the emotions of others, we can communicate and collaborate more effectively. People with high emotional intelligence tend to have stronger relationships and bounce back more easily after negative life events. This seminar provides participants with some tools to improve their emotional intelligence. Attendees will have a chance to: Define emotional intelligence, understand their feelings and the feelings of others, and develop tools to cope with feelings.

In this session we will explore key thought patterns, learn the importance of resilience, and develop transferrable skills, habits, and attitudes that will help you succeed anywhere.
Building Resilience
In today’s organizations, change is the rule rather than the exception. Reorganization, rapid growth and new technology are among the major changes. The purpose of this workshop is to highlight practical and proven methods for coping with organizational change. We’ll discuss: Low- and high-magnitude organizational change, Personal impact of change, The seven stages of change, Coping skills for work and home.
Connecting with Your Values
Do you know your personal values? The values we set determine the direction we go in life. This session is designed to help you connect with your own values, acknowledge and appreciate other’s values, and then discuss how we can utilize values to support our work. Define your values, understand how values are an important part of identity, reconnect with your strengths and develop a strategy to leverage them at NSU, all in this practical workshop.
Creating Opportunity
Opportunity is everywhere, if you know where to look. This class is an introduction to career planning and provides tips and strategies to help you seize the opportunities available to you while also creating opportunities for others. Explore career development, learn how to outline a career path, develop transferrable skills, habits, and attitudes that will help you and the team you belong to succeed anywhere.
Diversity as a Strength
Diversity can mean many things – let’s take a closer look at one of NSU’s Core Values: Diversity. This session will provide an opportunity to discuss how diversity is a strength, as well as provide a path to appreciating the differences of others. Distinguish different kinds of diversity, understand the successful use of what makes us unique, and understand the wide range of factors in dealing with different personalities and situations.

Connecting with individuals in your team makes for a better work environment for all. This session examines ways that we can collaborate more effectively, enhance mutual understanding, and contribute to a workplace where everyone can do their best work.
Effective Communication
Communication is a vital part of a successful organization. This presentation reviews the different types of communication used in the workplace and suggests how to be effective in each form. It includes: face-to-face communication, meetings, written, electronic and telephonic communication. We’ll discuss: Methods of communication used in the workplace, do’s and don’ts of workplace communication, and how to connect with individuals who have a different style of communication than your own.

In this course, you can learn how fostering diverse teams can help your organization stay competitive in the marketplace, drive innovation, expand the richness of thought, and remain relevant on a potentially global scale. Get acquainted with the oft-overlooked aspects of diversity and learn actionable ideas—like how to collect data, build referral programs, and expand your network—to include more diversity within your team. Instructor Amber Vanderburg also explains how to maximize the value of diversity by seeking a diverse and inclusive team. Each lesson offers practical insights for your own recruiting, hiring, and promotion processes.

It's easy to call out the qualities that make someone a poor team member. But what makes a person invaluable on a team? In this course, the instructor highlights the key characteristics of exemplary team members. By making subtle changes—you can adopt these behaviors to become a more valuable collaborator. Learn tips that can help you increase your self-awareness, demonstrate that you're a reliable teammate, approach teamwork more collaboratively, and more.
Communicating with Diplomacy and Tact
Diplomacy is a mindset; tact is a strategy. This course walks you through four scenarios that you might encounter on an average day, and coaches you through appropriate responses to challenging situations at work. It emphasizes core skills, such as authenticity, empathy, and listening, and shows examples, stories, and facts that bring their importance to life. By taking opportunities to practice at work and in your personal life, you can strengthen this delicate balance of skills and build relationships that can survive difficult interactions.
Cultivating Cultural Competence and Inclusion
Inclusive work environments can yield greater creative output, boost employee morale, and benefit a company’s bottom line. In this course, instructor Mary-Frances Winters explains why cultural competence is key to the success of any diversity-related initiative, as well as how to assess and grow your own cultural competence. She shares scenarios and techniques that can help you grasp how your worldview impacts your behavior, as well as how to more effectively engage and adapt across cultural differences.
Developing Cross-Cultural Intelligence
Being able to work across cultures is an increasingly necessary skill for all employees. This course helps you develop the cross-cultural intelligence to navigate cultural differences. It will outline the six primary areas of cultural difference, highlighting the differences between high- and low-context cultures. Once you can recognize the differences, it covers visual and nonvisual cues in the environment to inform your actions and respond effectively. The course closes with two scenarios that demonstrate how to apply the principles of cross-cultural intelligence.
Effective Listening
Listening is a critical competency, whether you are interviewing for your first job or leading a Fortune 500 company. Surprisingly, relatively few working professionals have ever had any formal training in how to listen effectively. In this course, you will learn how to assess your current listening skills, understand the challenges to effective listening (such as distractions!), and develop behaviors that will allow you to become a better listener—and a better colleague, mentor, and friend.
Having Difficult Conversations
Conflict is inevitable—in work and in life. Managers must address performance issues, and colleagues with competing priorities must figure out how to work together. These situations call for having difficult conversations. In this course, you will learn how to have difficult conversations, build your communication skills, and improve your relationships, teamwork, and business performance. You will also identify underlying differences in work styles, goals, and power dynamics and change the way you view conflict. Learn a model to move the conversation in a positive direction and to determine next steps. Plus, learn how to check for resistance with a single useful phrase.
Interpersonal Communication
Communicating effectively isn't an innate talent that some people have and others don't—it's something that anyone can learn and practice. In this course, learn strategies that can help you hone and master your interpersonal communication skills. Join personal branding and career expert, Dorie Clark, as she shares techniques for getting your message across effectively in the workplace, and explains how to tackle potential communication challenges with your colleagues and supervisor. She also discusses how to grapple with tricky situations, taking you through how to handle interruptions, respond to critical feedback, and communicate across cultures.
Inclusive Leadership
Join a global workforce management expert as they share how to create and lead an organization that leverages the diverse talents of all contributors. This course reveals the benefits of inclusive leadership, including the positive impacts it can have on employee engagement, innovation, and creativity. It will outline a best practice framework for developing inclusive leaders in an organization, and share tips for avoiding common leadership pitfalls. Upon wrapping up this course, you'll be equipped with practical strategies you can use to cultivate a more inclusive workforce.
Leading with Emotional Intelligence
Emotions are all around us in the office, and it's important for leaders to understand how to harness them to cultivate productivity and positive relationships. In this course, the instructor shares how to boost your emotional quotient (EQ) to better lead teams, work with peers, and manage up. Learn what emotional intelligence is and how it factors in at work, and discover concrete techniques for raising your own EQ. This includes perceiving yourself accurately, exercising emotional self-control, understanding and managing your triggers, and developing empathy. Then, turn those lessons around to build your awareness of others and become a more inspiring—and effective—leader.
Managing Multiple Generations
Explore perceived inter-generational differences and find out how to tap into the collaborative value of age diversity across an entire team. Learn how people born into distinct age cohorts can work together effectively, turning seemingly divergent attitudes and backgrounds into harmonious and productive working relationships. Also addressed are some of the common myths about each generation, and best practices to support managers and reports in working more effectively together. Learn the action steps organizations can take to better support age diversity.

The purpose of the Emerging Leadership Program is to equip People Managers new to their role with opportunities to develop and grow and create an inclusive environment where all employees can do their very best work. Both skill training and experiences will prepare individuals to achieve and operate at their full potential in driving Nova Southeastern University to achieve Vision 2025 and beyond.
